Species of Legionella Bacteria – Should you be concerned?

We have found it quite common to find species of Legionella bacteria in various waters that are not Legionella pneumophila. This is true of both potable and non-potable systems. To date, more than fifty-eight Legionella species have been discovered and documented in published articles from numerous authorities. Of these, roughly 25 have been linked to disease. It has been documented that the most virulent strain causing the majority of infections is Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 (LP1). So far, we have come across the many strains of the bacteria that are considered non-pathogenic. A few examples of these are:

  • L. Anisa, L. Dumoffii, L. Gormanii, L. Cherri, L. Parisiensis, & L. Bozemanii
  • These Blue-white species account for less than 3% of infections. Blue-white Legionella are typically nonpathogenic and their presence in water systems is common. These bacteria are commonly detected during testing are should not be cause for alarm.
  • L. Erythra & L. Rubrilucens
  • These Red species account for less than 3% of infections. These species are typically nonpathogenic, and their presence is commonly found in the environment but rarely causes infection.
